Marvin Lewis, a record-setting NFL defensive coordinator and one of the brightest and most innovative minds in the league, became the ninth coach in Cincinnati Bengals history on January 14, 2003.

Lewis has orchestrated an organizational overhaul in Cincinnati, leaving his imprint on the roster, coaching staff and front office. The effects of these changes have been felt throughout the community, as well as on the field, where Coach Lewis has directed the Bengals to the top of the AFC North division. His role in the Bengals’ stunning turn-around has been one of the biggest stories in sports.

Even before head coaching opportunity in Cincinnati, Lewis had over 20 years of coaching experience, as well as a long list of personal and professional accolades. He spent four seasons (1992-95) with the Pittsburgh Steelers as the linebackers coach, and from 1993-95, the Steelers’ defense ranked among the top three in the NFL each season.

After Pittsburgh, he spent six seasons as defensive coordinator with the Baltimore Ravens, a stint that included a Super Bowl victory following the 2000 season. The 2000 unit has been widely considered as the best NFL defense of all time. Lewis then directed the NFL’s fifth ranked defensive unit with Washington, serving as assistant head coach in addition to his coordinator’s role.
